Eagle River Fire hosted a multi-agency training this week that focused on Rapid Intervention Teams (RIT) and how to rescue injured or unconscious Firefighters.

Unlike rescuing a civilian, rescuing Firefighters requires specialized technique and teamwork to efficiently remove them from a hazardous environment. With all of our gear, we are heavy, awkward and likely in an extremely dangerous and hazardous part of a building during a structure fire or major crisis.

Crews reviewed and practiced how to quickly assess an unconscious Firefighter and how to employ the RIT Bag. This bag has a variety of functions, but allows for us to at least give the unconscious Firefighter a full bottle of air while crews work to extract them from the hazard. Each fire department in Eagle County has one of these bags, however these bags plus other equipment are all a little different between agencies. Part of this training was to come together on how to best affect a rescue of a firefighter from a different agency that with the tools that are available.

This past weekend, the Eagle River Fire Protection District hosted their annual awards ceremony to recognize members of the department for various milestones and achievements.

Our lateral Firefighters that were hired prior to the academy were formally pinned and recognized for completing their first year with the department. Other Firefighters were recognized for 5, 10 and 20 year anniversaries.

Our Division Chief of Wildland and Fire Management was officially pinned by his family.

Whole engine companies were given unit commendations for both rescues and CPR saves.

And then, finally, many members of our department were recognized for going above and beyond to facilitate, teach and otherwise significantly contribute to the success of our most recent fire academy.

If you're in the Edwards, CO area, keep an eye towards the training tower at Station 12. @eagleriverfire crews, as well as @vailfiredept @eagle_fire_dist and Gypsum Fire are currently training on RIT scenarios and will be continuing this training throughout the week.

RIT, otherwise known as the Rapid Intervention Team, is a designated crew specifically tasked with seeking out and rescuing Firefighters. Unlike rescuing a civilian, rescuing a Firefighter is extremely challenging as we are heavy, awkward and often found in the most hazardous location of a building during a structure fire.

These trainings emphasize technique and teamwork to efficiently remove a Firefighter from a dangerous environment and get them immediate care upon exiting.

Big thanks to @ecparamedics for participating and closing the loop on the care our rescues receive upon exiting these dangerous environments.
