“Preparedness over Panic”
About Us
Eagle Valley Wildland (EVW) is a division of the Eagle River Fire Protection District and also operates as an intergovernmental collaborative, coordinating wildland fire suppression, mitigation, and public outreach efforts across Eagle County.
Formed in August 2019 in response to Colorado’s fire history and the increasing wildfire risk within Eagle County, the EVW program has continued to grow and evolve. It currently employs eight full-time staff members and provides fire management services across approximately 1,680 square miles of wildland-urban interface (WUI), rural communities, forests, and rangeland.
Our Mission
To support this mission, EVW serves as a team of subject matter experts, coordinating pre-incident, incident, and
post-incident activities among emergency response agencies, local communities, and the public throughout its jurisdiction. The team brings a diverse range of experience, including backgrounds in municipal fire service, Interagency Hotshot Crews, and Helitack operations. This depth of expertise offers a well-rounded perspective on the challenges facing today’s fire service, along with practical and effective solutions.
Our District
Eagle Valley Wildland (EVW) is a comprised of Eagle River Fire Protection District (ERFPD), Greater Eagle Fire Protection District (GEFPD), and Gypsum Fire Protection District (GFPD). Resulting from the recognition of Colorado’s fire history and the presence of a growing wildfire threat within Eagle County, the EVW program was formed in August 2019. The program has continued to evolve and currently employs eight full-time staff members dedicated to response, planning, mitigation, and community education. EVW manages fire management across 1,680 square miles of Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), rural communities, forests, and rangeland. To accomplish this, the program functions as a resource of subject matter experts to coordinate pre-, during, and post-incident activities between the emergency response agencies, communities, and members of the public across its jurisdiction.

Open Burn Permits –
Eagle County
Eagle County burn permits are only available online through the County’s Mitigation & Wildfire Protection portal. You must apply for a permit before burning, and the application is reviewed by the Eagle County Office of Mitigation and Wildfire Protection. Permits are not required for a recreational bonfire in an enclosed fire pit, but it is still recommended to check out local fire restrictions. Eagle County enforces fire restrictions during high-risk periods, which may limit or prohibit open burning. These restrictions are set by the county sheriff’s office in coordination with local fire departments. Always check the Eagle County fire restrictions page before planning a burn to ensure compliance.
Always check the Eagle County Emergency – Current Fire Restrictions page before planning a burn to ensure compliance.
